My father at the RCA Space Center
The story starts with my dad, who worked at the RCA Space Center in Hightstown, New Jersey, where RCA built satellites.
Much of what came next, he and I did together.
Hi, I'm Mark. This is the story of ComProMedia and the father-and-son adventures in video, flight and computers that led to it. Scroll down and come along for the ride.
Scroll to fly the timeline, from my father's work at RCA to where I am now.
The story starts with my dad, who worked at the RCA Space Center in Hightstown, New Jersey, where RCA built satellites.
Much of what came next, he and I did together.
In high school I built and flew radio-controlled models. The hobby mixed electronics, radio and flight, and it pointed me toward the sky.
My interest in computers started with a TRS-80 Color Computer hooked up to a TV set. Type a command, press Enter, and see what happens.
My dad bought one of the first color prosumer video cameras from the RCA store at work. We started shooting videos of relatives and friends.
That grew into Santora Sight & Sound, the video production company he and I started in South Jersey.
The RC planes turned into real ones. I earned my private pilot's license through Mercer County Community College.
We recorded President Ronald Reagan when he visited Hammonton, New Jersey, the Blueberry Capital of the World.
Next came my first Macintosh, the 512K "Fat Mac." We used a Mac to create the titles for our Santora Sight & Sound videos.
My dad and I went to the second Mac Expo in San Francisco, in search of the first color Macintosh.
An accident changed my direction: a plane crash with my flight instructors at Mercer County College.
Afterward I enrolled at Stockton State College in South Jersey to study computer programming.
My interest in computers kept growing, and I went to work as a computer tech at casinos in Atlantic City, including the Golden Nugget and the Showboat.
I learned to run and pin cable and worked with Tandem NonStop mainframe computers at both.
I left the casinos and went back behind the camera, working mainly with my father videotaping weddings throughout South Jersey.
I started ComProMedia with encouragement from my friend Rich Graver, a really smart computer guy. We met at a State of New Jersey training class for people starting a business.
Our friendship grew over many hours of working on projects together, and he encouraged me to get into the IT support business.
For more than 13 years I've been the IT Director at WhiteSands Treatment Center in Fort Myers.
The cabling, the networks and the late-night troubleshooting from the casino days all found a home here.
ComProMedia is still with me. Through it I support many non-profits, and I keep exploring everything from high-end graphics and video to networking, smart home and AI technology.
It's a passion that keeps growing.
What started with my dad, a color camera from the RCA store and a TRS-80 hooked to the TV has turned into a lifetime of work with technology.
These days my time goes to WhiteSands Treatment Center and to the non-profits I support through ComProMedia. None of it would have happened without my father, and without Rich Graver pointing me toward IT.
